Faith-Based Construction Continues as a High-Growth Market Segment in the Upstate

January 16, 2025

The Upstate is experiencing a surge in faith-based construction projects, reflecting growing congregations, an increasing desire to connect with faith communities, and our booming population. Churches are quickly expanding their facilities not only to support worship services but fellowship and education programs as well. Here’s a look at some of the current worship facility trends in the Upstate.

1.  Expanding Congregational Gathering Spaces

One of the key challenges many churches face is determining which areas to prioritize for expansion. A natural place to start is often the sanctuary and narthex/lobby areas that serve as the heart of the church. In addition to adding square footage, renovations may incorporate new elements like coffee bars to meet diverse and changing worship styles.

Trehel has partnered with several faith-based organizations, like Immanuel Lutheran Church, Downtown Presbyterian Church, and Advent United Methodist Church, to expand their sanctuaries to accommodate growing congregations while also adding spacious lobbies to create a welcoming environment for attendees

2. Increasing Focus on Fellowship and Recreational Spaces

Churches are increasingly recognizing the value of fellowship and community-oriented spaces such as gymnasiums, fellowship halls and multipurpose rooms. These areas are not only essential for youth programs and other church ministries, but they also play a key role in community engagement.  For instance, some churches are adding amenities such as large, tech-forward auditoriums that can support community needs such as hosting speakers or musicians that may draw a large crowd.

As a recent trend, Trehel has helped deliver projects featuring fellowship halls and flexible spaces that serve as a hub for community events, youth activities, and church gatherings, supporting spiritual and social functions.

3. Demand for Educational and Classroom Spaces

Many Upstate churches are adding new classrooms to accommodate growing Sunday school classes, Bible study groups, and additional educational offerings. There’s also a growing trend of designing flexible classroom spaces that can handle varying group sizes and create a comfortable environment for learning and community.

Trehel has worked with faith-based organizations on projects that include adaptable educational spaces, ensuring that rooms can accommodate various class sizes and provide a comfortable learning environment for all age groups.

4. Real Estate and Infrastructure Growth

As churches continue to grow, many are looking to acquire additional real estate to accommodate their expansion needs. Some churches are purchasing adjacent properties, while others are seeking larger parcels of land. There is also a greater emphasis on infrastructure, such as parking and access, to ensure the facilities are well-supported.

For 42 years, Trehel has guided our faith-based clients in navigating the master planning process to develop a plan for future growth and expansion. This process serves as an essential tool for evaluating if their existing site can support growth, whether adjacent parcels are necessary to fulfill a 5-to-10-year vision, or if a completely new location is required.

Collaborative Planning and Budgeting for Successful Outcomes

Whether churches opt for the Design-Build delivery method, where contractors and designers work together, or choose to partner with an architect, early conceptual designs and pricing exercises are crucial for staying within budget. A collaborative approach helps ensure that the vision and design align with financial capabilities.

In partnership with trusted design professionals, Trehel has had the privilege of helping many faith-based organizations navigate the construction process. From identifying needs to planning for the future, we are humbled to assist our clients in achieving their goals.
